Kochi Metro, which is expected to function next year, will offer work to transgender for work. Jobs offered for transgender are House Keeping, Customer Care, and Crowd Management System.
This decision was made by top management of Kochi Metro Rail Limeted based on advice from Kochi City Police.
“This will be the first time a metro rail agency will provide jobs to transgenders, who find it difficult to absorb in the mainstream job market, they will not be KMRL staff, but will be part of the system,” KMRL officials said.
He said KMRL had previously decided to hand over home maintenance and customer care to Kudumbasree female members, a social agency in the field of government poverty alleviation projects, as part of a social inclusion program.
“Now, we have asked Kudumbasree to include a group of sexual transits in the work they are handed in. Police will first offer the transgender, which Kudumbasree will train, and then they will be absorbed into the metro rail system,” the source said. .
The municipal police of Kochi have a 120-odd transsexual registration. One day, a group of local transsexuals clashed with people from outside Kerala. Some of them also complained about the police with high arms. On Tuesday, they issued a demonstration to Kochi city police commissioner, who then held discussions with their representatives.
They complained to police that they were forced into sex work because mainstream people refused to offer them jobs. Therefore, the police are debating the idea of absorbing them in the labor force associated with Kochi metro. KMRL Managing Director Elias George made the decision after a discussion with city police commissioner M P Dinesh and local Department of Public Housing officials to rehabilitate transgender people.
